Dr Lamees Ras: The surgeon
Updated: Apr 23, 2019
Dr Lamees Ras @lameesras, a gynaecologist, is currently specialising in the field of urogynaecology, a niche medical field for which there are only a handful of sub-specialists in South Africa. She is the first urogynaecology fellow in South Africa, with doctors previously having to head off overseas in order to train and qualify as a urogynaecologist. Urogynaecology is the field that deals with clinical problems associated with dysfunction of the pelvic floor and bladder. Pelvic floor disorders affect the bladder, reproductive organs, and bowels. Urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse, badly impacts the lives of many women over the age of 50.
We are inspired by Lamees’s story because once qualified, she will be the first South African trained specialist and in so doing will be opening doors for future medical doctors to be trained in the country in this specialist area. We are also inspired by her commitment to improving a women's health issue that is often cloaked in a great deal of shame but for which treatment is available.
Lamees tells us that as a child she could not decide between being an architect and a medical doctor and now as a surgeon she is effectively an architect of the human body. She says given the long hours required by her chosen profession, she often finds that she lives from the boot of her car with a wardrobe available for any occasion (including high heels!), in case of emergency; and that one of her other vices is a desktop with no space left for any more shortcuts!
